SMART TRANSPORT HUB ANNOUNCED AS SUPPLIER for 'Automatic Traffic Counters' in Bath & North East Somerset

Monday, 1st October 2021

Smart Transport Hub today announce that it has been successfully appointed as the single provider for the provision of 12 Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs) for the area of Bath and North East Somerset with associated operational software and ongoing technical support.

The new ATCs are required to operate via a form of video analytics process so that road surface loops are not required. The ATCs and software will be able to distinguish various types of road users as shown below and to monitor and count those types passing through the monitoring sites. Offering maximum optical performance during both daylight and darkness, the system is able to distinguish between the following road user classification types:

• Pedestrians
• Pedal cycles, including carbon framed cycles
• Motorcycles (two wheeled motor vehicles generally)
• Cars
• Light vans under 3.5t
• Heavy vans 3.5t to 7.5t
• Minibuses
• Rigid lorries, ideally split by number of axles
• Articulated lorries/ rigid lorries with trailers
• Articulated lorries
• Buses and coaches
• (and more if required)

This partnership will enable Bath and North East Somerset Council to understand the types and volumes of traffic, such as pedal cycles and pedestrians, moving through the monitoring sites at all times of the day. As well as allowing for traffic and pollution reduction in the longer term by way of future traffic management strategies.

Improving People’s Lives

Bath & North East Somerset Council’s overarching strategic plan is set out with one overriding purpose – to improve people’s lives. The local authority has two core policies which include 'Tackling the climate and nature emergency' and 'Giving people a bigger say'. The key areas that will be tackled by the Council under its Climate Emergency Strategy are:

• Support transition to a green local economy
• Enable a major shift to walking, micro mobility (cycling), car-sharing, buses, and rail
• Carbon neutral development and energy efficiency retrofitting
• Increase natural environment carbon stores and biodiversity
• Carbon neutral, social and affordable housing
• Energy efficient homes
• Improvement to the transport infrastructure.

The Solution: Smart Lenz

Smart Transport Hub are committed to helping clients to meet their objectives. They have extensive experience when it comes to supporting clients to deliver Active Travel Projects and Walking and Cycling Schemes. With a team of experienced engineers, who have worked on key projects across the country.

The VECC sensor is the hardware used to capture the data. They are installed between 4 and 8 meters on a lamp column to capture the widest area. The sensors are used to identify various classified groups such as pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, HGVs etc using Smart Lenz VECC sensor camera technology. The VECC sensor works using Computer vision and can be configured to record just pedestrians and/ or cyclists at the chosen location or can be changed to identify all vehicle types.

The Smart Lenz, data portal software solution for monitoring and survey data management, provides a full range of analytic tools that automatically carry out specific analysis of the data collected by our sensors. These analytics and insights can be viewed online through our user-friendly dashboard or they can be downloaded in the form of a report. Each specific analysis can be viewed in both table and graphic format which can easily be inserted into any type of standard reporting frame, utilised by the council. The following images provide a snapshot of some of the functionality that we would include in the online data reporting.

The software can present live data of different classified road users in a heatmap format which is applied on top of the camera view. Pedestrians and cyclists moving through the survey point to allow for a graphic output that can be visualised in a heatmap (picture above) or in a tracking visualisation output. The data presented can be filtered by date, time and by vehicle class to allow for detailed insight gathering and data extraction.
